The New Zealand Gambling Act 2003 gives authority for New Zealand's TAB and Lotteries Commission to operate over the Internet. There they can peddle merchandise that is normally sold through their retail outlets. TAB is fully authorized to offer bets on sports, dog and horse racing. The Lotteries Commission is allowed to sell lottery-related products. With so much global online gambling activity it's no wonder that New Zealanders are wondering when they'll be able to gamble online. Good news Kiwis are hoping that they'll one day be able to gamble within the cyber-space of their own geographic domain. For now they'll have to be content with betting with offshore Internet Gambling providers. Those TAB and Lottery companies fortunate enough to be operating in New Zealand are safe in the knowledge that competitors are blocked from entering the market. And in a serendipitous move for pundits, June 2008 marked the beginning of Virtual Horse-Racing TABs being opened up throughout New Zealand. What's next - online gambling perhaps?

Turns out that Kiwi and Australian online gamblers are known to be big spenders. A closer look at the numbers proves that is not the case. In fact, they are on the lower end of the scale. A University of Lethbridge study published numbers that have local online gamblers spending NZ$539 per month on average - a large amount indeed. But one of the study's authors, Robert Williams, said: "Only the median values provide somewhat meaningful comparisons between the regions. Using this criteria, the Australia-New Zealand internet and non-internet gamblers have the lowest expenditures of any region." The median values for Kiwi's is NZ$16, about a tenth of the media value for American gamblers. NumbersStatistics New Zealand reports that Lotto is the most popular gaming activity at 86%. Gaming Machines (not in a casino) rank only sixth in popularity at 37%. There are about 20,000 non-casino gaming machines in New Zealand. Total spending on gambling in 2007/08 reached NZ$2.034 billion. ProtectionOnce the player sits across the machine, he or she will find a new trend of player protection: Player Information Display. Starting July 1, venues will have to pop a small screen warning players of the risk in gambling.

It is certainly not every day that the head of state inadvertently does some good for the casino industry. But Prime Minister John Key certainly did some good for Christchurch Casino after his appearance on an American television show. The Late Show with David Letterman When PM Key was in New York City two weeks ago, he was interviewed by David Letterman. The subject of his interview: the top 10 reasons for visiting the islands of New Zealand. The Prime Minister listed, as one of the top 10, that New Zealand had the 'loosest slot machines in the Pacific rim.' It was only a matter of time before the casino industry pounced on the PM's words to make them count. Now Christchurch Casino is singing the PM's praises and using his words in their latest advertisement. Does he regret what he said? The Prime Minister stands fully behind his words as he believes that his island nation truly does have the best pokies in the Pacific. And as he later added, gambling is legal in New Zealand and it's part and parcel of the Kiwi lifestyle. The bigwigs in the casino industry are now hoping that a percentage of the Las Vegas traffic can be diverted to New Zealand. But the costs of advertising are highly restrictive - some $1 million for a 30-second slot and his on-screen appearance would have cost $8 million. That kind of airtime is worth a mint to the casino industry and all the gambling pundits are smiling thanks to Key.

An advisory body to the Australian government has recommended that the country liberalize online gambling laws, a move that will no doubt be applauded by pro-gambling campaigners across the Tasman, where online gambling is similarly in a state of partial legalization. Australian citizens, like their Kiwi counterparts, are not specifically banned from gambling online. However, the Australian federal government's 2001 Interactive Gambling Act made it illegal for companies to offer online gambling in Australia, similar to laws in New Zealand that have banned online gambling providers from entering the local market. But with the latest recommendation, which will be strongly taken into account by the Australian government, Australia could be on its way to finally overturning those old laws and fully legalizing online gambling. Although Kiwis and Aussies share a healthy rivalry that often stops the citizens of one country admitting that the other country has got it right, pro-gambling advocates in New Zealand will no doubt be watching developments in Australia closely in the hope that New Zealand follows suit and re-examines its online gambling laws.
