This is a quick look at the year that was in the world of gambling and online casinos in New Zealand.
William Hill Bingo was also a winner in 2009 taking out the Bingostreet Site of the Month award in July 2009. Its promotion giving new players $25 free upon depositing and playing $10 within the first 24 hours also proved hugely popular.
In poker news, Simon Watt, an Aucklander, took out the SkyCity Festival of Poker NZPT Main Event. He successfully outplayed 263 rivals from world-class field of poker players to eventually take home over NZ$200,000 in winnings.
In other poker related news, a long-running legal dispute between two previous friends and well known New Zealand poker players, Jamil Dia and Constantine Harach, was back before a Wellington court in July for the fifth time. Their dispute involves shares in a $500,000 win at Melbourne's Crown Casino back in early 2005. The two men had the practice of sharing winnings on occasions. But this time, Dia declined to share and Harach claims there was an agreement to split 20% of winnings with him. The court again decided to backed Dia.
In early October, the longest running jackpot in NZ Lotteries history finally came to an end with the winning ticket being worth a total of NZ$22,434,379! This turned out to be the largest powerball prize won in the history of NZ Lotteries.
The NZ Ministry of Health announced mid-year that it would spend nearly NZ$700,000 to research the effects of the industry's advertising, sponsorship and promotion of gambling on public views and attitudes and whether casinos and the TAB target specific cultures.
The objective of the research is to find ways to prevent and address gambling harm. It will also consider whether marketing of large lottery jackpots encourages people to spend more money on lotteries than they normally would otherwise. Results of the research are expected to be delivered in June 2013.
New TAB TV
And finally in the news of 2009, the New Zealand Racing Board just launched a new TV channel in December known as 'TAB TV' which focuses primarily on greyhounds, harness racing and thoroughbreds. The new channel is shown in all TAB outlets and also broadcast on Sky Digital. In other TV news, Playtech TV was recently launched on Casino Las Vegas and Swiss Casino to bring all the excitement of live or fully automated game shows right into the lounge room of their players.
